▷▷▷A Chicken Ark - Providing the Ideal Home For Sybil, Manuela and Polly

Our 'girls' are new to us this spring, and seem very happy so far.  They like their transportable chicken ark that we built in less than a day from downloadable plans, and are enjoying their supervised forays colse to the garden.  We move the chicken ark every day and the hens are clearing some rough patches with obvious enthusiasm.

When they're out ranging free, there's been a microscopic nibbling of plants, but nothing serious, and it's so entertaining, watching them scratch and peck freely and observing the developing relationships.

We're expecting our first eggs in a few weeks and in the meantime we're getting to know them. They're Orpingtons - well we live colse to in Kent, so it seemed a good choice and they grow to large, handsome hens.

Sybil is the boss - bigger, rather bossy and overbearing, with extraordinary developing plumage and forever preening.

Manuela is eager and pecks colse to busily, but seems a microscopic lost. We hope Sybil won't get too impatient with her, and start bullying, but Sybil obviously reckons Manuela is lower in the pecking order and treats her as if she's a bit dim. Polly is sensible and organised; good at looking grubs and insects.  She just seems to get on with life, tolerating Sybil and organising Manuela, leading her colse to the garden to find new areas to explore. 

If we had a rooster, I guess we'd have to call him Basil.  I doubt if it would be as rude and bad tempered as his namesake though. You don't need a rooster, and they can be noisy and disrupting, so we won't be completing the cast.

Chickens do have distinct personalities; it's not just our imagination.  They form a pecking order and ours do seem to have taken on the roles of the main characters in Fawlty Towers. We'll see how well the names fit as the girls grow up.

We were a microscopic wary about retention hens, but the chicken ark was easy and cheap to build. Sadly It doesn't have the appealing staircase of the original Fawlty Towers (do you remember it went up and down on the landing for no good reason?) - but it does have good roosting and nesting areas and safety from the local foxes. Perhaps some architectural quirks can be incorporated into Mark 2 to add some more character.

Sybil, Polly and Manuela look as though, like their namesakes, they'll furnish fullness of entertainment. Hopefully they'll also be good egg layers as well - and last more than the chicken equivalent of 12 episodes.

In the prehistoric times the houses in Greece were commonly of the atrium-type and the rooms were arranged around a central courtyard. In such types of homes, a covered but otherwise open patio served as the kitchen. In the early days of Roman Empire, as the common folk in cities often had no kitchen of their own they used to cook in large communal kitchens.The early medieval European longhouses had an open fire under the top point of the building.The first identified stoves in Japan date about from the same time and these stoves are named as kamados and they were typically made up of clay and mortar. In wealthier homes an self-operating system for a rotating spit for roasting invented by Leonardo da vinci was used.

Next comes the Industrialization followed by Rationalization and Technicalization.

Industrialization:

Due to the advancement in the technologies industrialization not only brought major changes but also communal changes to the kitchen.

Rationalization:

The trend to mounting gasification and electrification prolonged at the turn of the 20th century and the work processes were attempted to be streamlined in industries.

This forms the phase of rationalisation.

Technicalization:

The idea of standardized dimensions and layout industrialized for the Frankfurt kitchen took hold and the thought was refined in the "Swedish kitchen" using unit furniture with wooden fronts for the kitchen cabinets.

Designing of kitchen:

The most principal mode of kitchen is designing. All of us who ensue the trends in adornment and found are well aware of the vogue for mega-sized kitchens than the commonplace ones. There is nothing against these grand spaces, but it always warms our heart especially the found sensibilities to visit small kitchens that sparkle with both efficiency and style.

Some of the things that we have to do for getting more efficiency in a small place are nothing but renovating without expansion.The steps that are to be followed are as follows:

Define the space:

A small kitchen cannot serve too many functions. For instance, eliminating or curious the junk drawer, serving the kitchen as a catchall for bills, trash mail, homework assignments and odds and ends. Open shelves also force the cook to be tidy and neat, and to eliminate non-essential items from view. The hoax of the great designer is creating the sense of more light and air.

Clear counter surfaces:

If the face area is microscopic do not park the microwave, toaster and coffeemaker on the counter. Instead of that keep them on a movable commercial cart or in a pantry cupboard. Do we absolutely need all those appliances? If suppose the bread machines are to be used occasionally, store it in the middle of uses in a lowest cabinet, a countertop appliance garage or in a storehouse area face the kitchen.

Think face the box:

If we are scheming a kitchen to meet our desired cooking requirements, then think through all the steps and make the kitchen fit our needs.
